Green Screen 101

green screen studio film set up

A green screen can be a handy tool when you want to add variety to a singular space. While it may seem like a futuristic concept, green screen technology has been around since the 19th century. We see this art of illusion used in Hollywood, as well as on the news and weather stations. Today, the process is technically called chroma keying or color keying and has made it easier than ever before to create special effects. Keep reading to learn more about green screens and how our media services team can help you bring your stories to life.

What is a Green Screen?

A green screen is a visual-effect and post-production technique for compositing two images or video streams together based on color hues. This technology basically allows you to insert any backdrop you want in the background of your production.

The name green screen was adopted simply because this technology involves an actual screen. The color green was chosen for this screen because it doesn’t match any natural skin tone or hair colors, making it easy to remove without grabbing parts of the person in the foreground. It’s also said to be a color least worn by television personalities or used for display purposes.

Why is a Green Screen Useful?

With a green screen, you can turn a single space into a hundred different ones effortlessly. Say you’re working in a studio, and you need that space to take the shape of multiple different areas of your business. No problem! Or maybe you’re teaching an online course, and you’d like a classroom inserted seamlessly behind you. Insert the images you want to be represented, and you can have them in the background while you present in the foreground. If you want something a little more simplistic, you can also go with a basic white background and logo free of distractions. The choice is yours!

This technology is super helpful when it comes to web presentations. A green screen allows presenters to be on the screen while still having content scrolling behind them as they present. Better yet, you won’t have to worry about screen sharing or having a distracting box around you while trying to pitch a project or teach a class.

How Does a Green Screen Work?

The green screen technique involves the layering of images. The background layer is the transparent green screen, and the foreground is the final displayed image. The screen is placed behind the image to be displayed. Studio green backdrops are used to surround the object to create a floating effect.

When shooting with a green screen, it involves filming a person or adding visual effects in front of that solid green color. Then, you can digitally remove or “key out” that green color, so you can then drop that scene onto any background of your choice in post-production.
