Capturing Sports Highlights: Tips for Filming School Sports Games

Your team scores the winning point of the game, and the crowd goes wild with excitement. Capturing that moment on video ensures it will last a lifetime. School sports bring people together and cultivate a sense of school pride within the community. Whether you’re filming your team’s road to victory, getting highlights to promote a game, or using the content to capture the support of your school, sports highlights showcase your team and, as a bonus, are fun to film!

The game’s high point can happen at any given moment and be easy to miss if you’re filming a different part of the field or another player. Or worse, the camera is in the right place, but the video comes out blurry. Sports highlights can be tricky to film so before documenting the game, remember these tips to effectively capture the excitement and exhilaration of the game in real time.

Get The Right Angles

The right angles are essential to capture clear sports highlights. Games and plays move quickly, and there can be lots of moving parts happening between players or across a field. Directing your camera angle to capture the entire moment is necessary so viewers can clearly see what is happening when they view it for the first time. Having multiple cameras stationed in different areas adds extra angles and more coverage, limiting the chances of missing a key highlight. Favor wide angles to capture all of the game, moving onto individual players as the focus of the game shifts to them. Try to find some high ground so your camera depicts what is happening with an organized angle. Keeping the ball in frame is a good rule of thumb to ensure capturing as much of the action as possible.

Timing is Everything

The winning shot of the game can’t be used in a highlight video if the camera is still pointed at the other side of the court. As a videographer, you need to remain alert and record the entirety of the game. Getting the timing right can be challenging because you’re not always sure when the best moment of the game will be. It’s smart to understand the sport you’re documenting so the camera follows the plays as well as you are. You should have a camera that is able to move with the speed of the game. It should be able to focus quickly, zoom in clearly, and have the option of different lenses, depending on the moments you’re looking to capture. You don’t want to miss out on the winning shot of a game because you couldn’t time the moment right.

Essential Shots Are Key

An entire game or season is usually shortened down to a few minutes, so each second truly does matter. Sports highlights should be action-packed, portraying your team’s most skilled and victorious moments. Pick through your footage to get the best clips, keeping the editing simple and letting the excitement of the game speak for itself. Shots included will depend on what sport you’re recording, but there should always be winning points, and high-quality plays clearly conveyed.
